JULY 2021 MEETING MINUTES
Members of the Waretown Historical Society met in the Little Red Schoolhouse.
Before the Meeting opened, Prayers were asked for several of our members.
Meeting began at 7:30pm with a Flag Salute.
1. Minutes from the previous meeting were read by Linda B. Joan F. motioned to accept the minutes. Ron T. seconded. A decision was made to post the minutes on the webpage.
2. Treasurer’s Report – Anne G. filed her report during the Executive Board meeting. A motion to accept the report was made by Ron T. and seconded by Bill F.
3. Memorials and Membership: Linda B. says there are 111 paid members as of today.
4. Correspondence- A thank you note will go out to Joe Horner Estate thanking them for the return of our original bell.
5. Program Committee Report –
Sandy G. brought up the possibility of having a speaker come out to talk about the Underground Railroad in NJ. She also mentioned watching the movie, but that it is very long. She also told us that the Harriet Tubman museum in Cape May is now open.
Ron T. is still looking into a program with the Bee Keeper.
BIG plans for our September meeting. Sept. 19,2021 with a rain date of Sept. 26th. Back to School with the Pinelands Symphonic Band. We will need to supply approximately 50 chairs. A motion to take our inside chairs outside was made by Anne G. and seconded by Bill F. and Ron T. People will be asked to bring their own chairs. Joan F. will look into a PA System for the evening. The Police will be notified and asked about parking. Docents for the night will be Anne, Joan, Adele, Ron, Sandy, Joan and Linda. The museum will be open prior to the concert. We will advertise on the website, Facebook – different groups and the town website. We will serve refreshments.
Old Business: Not really any except the need to review the insurance policy. This will be covered at the Executive Board meeting.
New Business
New email will be sent out for the September, Sunday meeting.
Shed needs to be power washed. Sunshine Detailing has done it before, but it has been hard to contact them.
Flag program Report John P. said the Flags went out and in without any problems. Excellent job.
Juneteenth is now a Federal Holiday. Will we add it to the list for putting out the flags? No decision as of this meeting.
John P. brought up the fundraiser to help fund the Carousel in Seaside Heights.
Grant Report – None.
Trustee Report – Filters have been replaced in the heating and AC. Cleaning supplies have been replenished. More weeding was done. The bottom of the door has a new metal trim and was touched up with a bit of paint.
Acquisitions- Original School Bell (circa 1968-69) is back in the schoolhouse, donated back to us from the Joe Horner estate.
Announcements to Members –
Anne G. showed us a little book from Sept. 10,1914 that discusses Village Improvement ideas for Waretown.
Ron T. mentioned that they are blowing the Fog Horn from the Andrea D’Orio on July 25th in Beach Haven and that there is an article describing it in the Sand Paper.
John Y. did a bit of background checking on the descendants of Abraham Waier. He did find some information, but as far as he can tell, there are no descendants in this area.
Motion to Adjourn – Anne G. second – Bill F. 8:13pm
At this point the official meeting was over and Joan F. took the floor and told everyone where the loom had come from and how they had gotten it back into working order. She explained that this is a simple loom used to make rough fabrics, rugs, table mats, etc. Joan demonstrated the working of the loom and encouraged all to give it a try. Most of the members did try the loom. One member allowed us to video him. (see below)
Anne G. threaded the foot pedal sewing machine and successfully sewed a hem around a piece of fabric that had been made on our loom. (see video below) All without electricity!!
