FEBRUARY 2022 MEETING MINUTES
An appreciation of our past, Community in the present, and Preservation for the Future.
Minutes of the Executive Board - Feb. 21, 2022
Meeting started a little bit before 7 pm. Adele S, Ron T, Linda B (acting secretary)
We had a very short executive meeting since so few board members were present. We had 4 people give us donations. One rather large donation. We have 85 paid members for 2022 so far.
Treasurer's report was put on hold.
We have received one story.
A sympathy card was sent to Damon's wife. (Damon's IGA- Waretown)
Our regular meeting started around 7:25 pm. In attendance, June M, Sandy G, John P, Linda B, Ron T, Adele S.
Before the actual meeting was started Adele S brought to our attention that one of the recipients from last year's scholarship had not cashed his check because he did not attend college, but instead is attending Fireman's Training School. She was asking our members how they feel about him accepting the money. June M made a motion for him to accept the money, Sandy G seconded.
Community members to keep in our prayers - Richard Eskilson, Paul Bonnell, Jim Portale, and Anne G.
Flag salute.
Minutes from our previous meeting are now online to help shorten our meeting time. Motion to accept the minutes was made by June M and seconded by Sandy G.
Treasurer's report is on hold.
Memorials and Membership
A sympathy card was sent to Damon's wife. Damon ran the IGA in Waretown for many years. At this time, there are 85 paid members for 2022.
Correspondence - Adele received a list of candidates for our annual scholarship to two past Waretown graduates. Decisions for the scholarships will be handled by our scholarship committee.
Program committee report - No committee at this time.
Flag program Report - No report at this time since John P. was absent. However it is time to send out letters for this year. Possibly adding more members, thinking about an increase in money with the added Dec. 7th? This committee needs more volunteers.
Newsletter - No committee at this time. A suggestion was made by Linda B. that instead of a newsletter, we could put together a 3 fold flyer that could be handed out at meetings, or at special events, etc. Ron T made a motion to start working on this flyer, June M seconded it.
Vacant positions - Our Society is still in need of someone to volunteer to be our Secretary, corresponding Secretary and Membership, Program Committee, Newsletter/Flyer committee, Website committee, Gardening committee,. If anyone is interested in anything, you may contact Adele S directly, or Linda B at [email protected] or you can visit out website and fill out a contact form.
Joan F had made a motion to move our money in a savings account from Ocean First to TD Bank. Seconded by John P.
Looking to the future for possible program ideas?
We might have an open house.
Ron might be able to get a speaker.
Sandy G is putting together information for a possible day trip to see the Harriet Tubman's museum in Cape May. She also spoke about an author coming to the library to speak about Slaves in NJ. There were many Quakers in our area at that time who were against slavery.
The Harriet Tubman Museum Trolley Tour would include information about the underground railroad, visiting the house, etc. we could car pool down and then take the trolley ride $22 each person, Museum admission $25 each, We could park at the school if our date is after school is over. We would need to have 18-25 absolute people to attend to make this possible. We would have to pick a date.
Ron T explained about upgrading the holders for the flags if necessary and that there is a new system to prevent dirt from going into the poles, which helps with keeping people's cars cleaner.
Trustee report - leaves are constantly being moved aside.
Memories of Living in Waretown - we have received one letter so far.
Acquisitions - Sandy G donated a tin type. And a Miniature of an actual grocery store.
Additional comments from the floor:
Ron T asked about the possibility of having the museum open for tours on a regular basis, similar to some of our neighboring museums. We could advertise that we are open and possibly bring in new members and or volunteers.
A motion to adjourn was made by June M and seconded by Sandy G.
Our guest speakers at tonight’s special meeting were
Susan Makuka, Master Spinner from South Jersey Guild of Spinners
and Hand Weavers. She and her colleagues demonstrated the use of several spinning wheels and other devices. She brought her own wheels along with other spinners to help with the demonstration.
We had a Spintastic Time!!!
